New versions for the Boeing 777

Boeing is working on blueprints for a next generation of the highly successful 777. Airbus is threatening the Triple Seven with its A350, so Boeing needs an answer. The airframer is advancing towards a probable late-2012 launch of a 777X family. This would result in a first flight in 2017 or 2018 and service entry in 2019. Aerospace magazine Flight International is reporting extensively about the subject. Boeing is thinking of a stretched 777-200ER as 777-8X, a stretched 777-300ER as 777-9X and an ultra-long-range 777-8LX. The new versions might make the 777 the first twin-aisle programme to reach 2,000 deliveries. Fuel burn should be more than 20 per cent better than that of the current 777.
