Lufthansa launches a new low-cost long-haul airline under the Eurowings brand. The renewed subsidiary airline will start operations in late 2015 from Cologne/Bonn Airport. Lufthansa will lease up to seven Airbus A330-200 aircraft for the new operation.
The first long-haul flights will be introduced from the end of 2015 onwards. These flights will initially be performed by a fleet of three Airbus A330-200 aircraft, each offering 310 seats. The number of A330-200s will then be gradually expanded to up to seven over the next few years.
The Eurowings initiative is Lufthansa's answer to increasing competition from low-cost carriers in the long-haul travel segment. The airline is to operate under a revised Eurowings brand and will be flown under the air operator certificate (AOC) of SunExpress Deutschland. Eurowings will use SunExpress cockpit and cabin crews. Destinations to be served are in Florida, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean.
Lufthansa also intends to open a new Eurowings base outside Germany during 2015. The current Eurowings fleet of 23 Bombardier CRJ900 jets will be replaced with up to 23 Airbus A320s between February 2015 and March 2017. (Image: Lufthansa)
