Air France-KLM to phase out Martinair MD-11s

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is going to leave the fleet of Martinair next year. Martinair is part of the Air France-KLM Group, which will halve the number of dedicated freighters in the fleet, as it announced today. Air France keeps two Boeing 777Fs and KLM/Martinair three Boeing 747-400F aircraft.

Air France-KLM was rumoured to put Martinair for sale because of the ongoing bad results of the group in the cargo business, but the Dutch freight airline is a too important asset to sell. It owns important traffic rights and has a good reputation.

In 2011 Martinair stopped flying passengers and now the cargo fleet is reduced with five MD-11s. Air France and KLM keep carrying cargo in the bellies of their passenger aircraft.

Martinair received its first MD-11 in 1984. It flew a total of seven aircraft of the type, of which five are still in service.
