Philippine Airlines is phasing out the Boeing 747. On Monday, 1 September, its last Boeing 747-400 will arrive for the last time at Ninoy Aquino International Airport near Manila. The aircraft comes from San Francisco and will receive a water-cannon salute.
Philippine Airlines has flown the Boeing 747 for 35 years. The airline used the Queen of the Skies as flagship aircraft on long-haul routes to North America, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.
PAL received its first Jumbo Jet, a 747-200, in December 1979. Since then it operated eightteen 747s, including eleven 747-200s and seven 747-400s. In 1995 it leased two additional 747-200s from Middle East Airlines (MEA) for a short time.
PAL is replacing the 747s with newer and more fuel-efficient Boeing 777 Triple Seven aircraft. PAL currently has six Boeing 777 aircraft in service, which fly to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver and Toronto.
